Artists, authors, activists, academics - a great way to learn about original humanities work in Tokyo

Our 20th cafe will take place on Friday, January 31st, 2025 (19:30 - 21:15) at Ryozan Park Lounge, near Sugamo Station on the JR Yamanote line. Details and poster coming soon.
What is a "humanities cafe"?

Our cafes bring research out of the universities and into an informal setting. No specialist knowledge is required. Events are free and open to all.

Each presenter gives a 10-15 minute talk in English about any aspect of their work. For example, they might explain an ongoing research project, talk about a book of poetry or a translation they're working on, or discuss their photography career...

Artists, authors, activists, academics...

The talks are all pitched (TED-style) at a general audience - so no specialist knowledge is required. There'll also be plenty of time to relax with a drink and exchange ideas with other attendees.

Events are organized and compèred by two researchers at Tokyo universities - Alex Watson (Meiji University), and Laurence Williams (Sophia University). Learn more about the history of Tokyo Humanities here.
