Competing Imperialisms in Northeast Asia, 1893-1953: Concepts and Approaches, the inaugural meeting of the Competing Imperialisms Research Network (CIRN), will be held at Waseda University on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th April next week. Date and time: Friday April 19th 9:00 am-6:30 pm; Saturday April 20th 9:00-4:15 pm. Place: No. 1 Conference Room, 10th Floor, Building 3, Waseda Campus, Waseda University, Tokyo. Website: https://blogs.qub.ac.uk/competingimperialisms/ About the CIRN The Competing Imperialisms Research Network (CIRN) brings together UK-based and Japan-based scholars to develop interdisciplinary approaches to Northeast Asia’s turbulent modern history of imperialism, interconnection and resistance. Funded by the UK’s ESRC and AHRC, the Competing Imperialisms Research Network explores new approaches to Northeast Asia’s contested pasts, bringing leading and early career scholars together in this common endeavour. The project emphasises interdisciplinary, international and comparative approaches to the study of imperialisms, transnational connections, frontiers and borderland communities in the region. It includes scholarly articles and an an edited collection, further conferences in Belfast and St. Petersburg, and public history activities. The CIRN project is led by the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics at Queen’s University, Belfast UK, and by the Institute of 20th Century Media, Graduate School of Political Science at Waseda University, alongside the Faculty of Asian and African Studies at St Petersburg University. Entirely in keeping with its promise to lead with concepts and approaches, this inaugural Waseda Conference will probably raise more questions than answers. With this in mind, we look forward especially to your keen engagement and attendance next Friday 19th and Saturday 20th. Pre-registration: All welcome, attendance free of charge, but please pre-register by email to [email protected] no later than midnight Japan time, Tuesday April 16th.
